Sandy Soil, Shoreline Trees and a Fast-Growing Town

Rockland has grown quickly, and it shows in the trees. Morris Village and the newer subdivisions south of the highway are full of young landscape trees and builder-planted cedar that need shaping rather than removing. The older streets running down toward the Ottawa River are the opposite — mature poplar, willow, silver maple and ash that have been there far longer than the subdivisions.

The ground here is sandier than most of Ottawa, which cuts both ways. Trees root more deeply and drain better, so they handle a wet spring more comfortably than the clay-bound trees in Barrhaven. But sandy soil holds a stump differently, and grindings settle more over the following year, so a filled stump hole here usually needs topping up once the next spring.

Shoreline properties get the wind straight off the river with nothing between. Poplar and willow along that edge are fast-growing, weak-wooded and the first things to shed limbs in a summer storm.

Worth knowing: Rockland is in the City of Clarence-Rockland, Prescott and Russell — not the City of Ottawa. Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law 2020-340 does not apply here. Clarence-Rockland has its own rules; check with the municipality before a large removal.

What Sandy Soil Changes

Stump grinding settles more. Grindings and backfill compact faster in sand than in clay. Plan on topping the spot up once the following spring before you seed it, or you will end up with a dish in the lawn where the stump was.

Locates take time. Ontario One Call locates are mandatory before grinding near buried gas, hydro, water or telecom, and they take several business days to come back. In the newer Morris Village streets, where services run close to landscape beds, that is worth building into your timeline — it is a scheduling constraint rather than a cost, and we raise it when you book rather than at the door.

Shoreline species. Poplar and willow grow fast and fail early. They are worth keeping for shade while sound, but they need looking at more often than a hardwood would, and a crown thinning before the summer storm season is cheaper than the emergency callout after one.

Rockland Tree Service FAQs

No. Rockland is in the City of Clarence-Rockland in Prescott and Russell, not the City of Ottawa, so By-law 2020-340 and its 30 cm distinctive-tree permit rule do not apply to your property. Clarence-Rockland has its own rules. Check with the municipality before a large removal – and be wary of anyone quoting you Ottawa permit rules out here.

Sandy soil. Rockland ground drains and compacts faster than the clay through most of Ottawa, so grindings and backfill settle noticeably over the first year. The fix is simple: fill it now, then top it up once the following spring with clean soil before you seed or sod. Grindings themselves make poor topsoil because the decomposing wood pulls nitrogen out of the ground.

If it is near buried services, several business days – Ontario One Call locates are mandatory before ground disturbance and they take time to come back. That is scheduling, not cost. A stump in the middle of the lawn away from services can usually be done much sooner. We tell you which yours is when you send the photo.

For poplar and willow, unfortunately yes. Both grow fast and lay down comparatively weak wood, and shoreline trees take the wind straight off the river with nothing to break it. They are worth keeping for shade while they are structurally sound, but they need inspecting more often than a hardwood would, and a crown thinning before storm season costs far less than the emergency callout after one.
