Kemptville Is Not Ottawa - And Your Tree Rules Are Different

This is the thing most Ottawa tree companies get wrong about Kemptville: it is in the Municipality of North Grenville, not the City of Ottawa. Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law 2020-340, with its 30 cm distinctive-tree permit rule, does not apply to your property. North Grenville has its own rules covering woodlands and municipal trees, and they are not the same. Before any large removal here, ask the municipality directly — and be sceptical of any contractor who tells you Ottawa’s permit rules apply out here, because it means they have not checked.

The trees are different too. Kemptville lots are bigger, more of them back onto woodlot or hedgerow, and a lot of what we do is edge work: taking out the dying or leaning trees on the boundary between mowed yard and bush before they come down on their own. Larger properties also mean equipment can usually get in, which makes for faster, cheaper removals than the same tree in a city back yard.

The Rideau River corridor through Kemptville and down toward Burritts Rapids carries mature silver maple, elm and ash on softer ground. Riverside trees root shallow in wet soil and go over in wind more readily than the same species on high ground.

Woodlot Edges, Big Lots and Full Equipment Access

Boundary and hedgerow work. The line where a mowed yard meets bush is where trees fail toward the house. Those trees grew with shelter on one side and open sky on the other, so their structure is asymmetric and their exposure changed the day the lot was cleared. Working that edge deliberately, rather than reacting to it after a storm, is the highest-value thing a rural property owner can do.

Access is an advantage here. On most Kemptville properties the truck and chipper get within reach of the tree, and the drop zone is genuinely open. That means a lot of removals can be felled conventionally rather than dismantled from a rope — the same tree costs meaningfully less here than it would behind a Nepean bungalow.

Firewood. Larger properties usually mean somewhere to stack it. We can cut the trunk into rounds and leave it rather than chipping and hauling — say so when you book, because it changes how we set up.

Kemptville Tree Service FAQs

No. Kemptville is in the Municipality of North Grenville, not the City of Ottawa, so Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law 2020-340 and its 30 cm distinctive-tree rule do not apply to your property. North Grenville has its own rules for woodlands and municipal trees. For a large removal, check with the municipality directly. Any contractor who quotes you Ottawa permit rules out here has not done their homework.

Usually, yes, and the reason is access. On most Kemptville properties the truck and chipper can reach the tree and there is a genuine open drop zone, so the tree can be felled conventionally instead of being dismantled piece by piece from a climbing rope. The same tree in a city back yard can take twice as long for exactly that reason.

Start with the edge where your mowed yard meets bush. Those trees grew sheltered on one side and open on the other, so their crowns are lopsided and their root plates are one-sided too — and clearing the lot changed their exposure permanently. Edge trees leaning toward the house are the ones that come down in a storm.

Yes, and it is worth asking for. We can cut the trunk into rounds and stack them rather than chipping and hauling everything away. Tell us when you book, because it changes how we set up the job on the day.

Is there a tree service that covers Kemptville, Ontario?

Yes. Max Trees is an owner-operated tree service based in Ottawa that works Kemptville and North Grenville: Max quotes every job personally and is on site for the work, carries commercial general liability insurance, and is Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Quotes come within 48 hours of the site visit; most residential removals run $500 to $2,500 plus HST, with a $160 minimum on any job, and a rural lot is often cheaper than the same tree in a city back yard because the truck and chipper can reach it and there is an open drop zone. We can cut the trunk into rounds and stack them for firewood instead of chipping it - say so when you book. Ottawa's By-law 2020-340 and its 30 cm permit rule do not apply in Kemptville, and we have found no municipal permit requirement for removing a tree on an ordinary private residential lot in North Grenville's published by-laws; confirm with the municipality on a wooded lot. Whoever you call, ask for an insurance certificate from the broker and a written quote with cleanup included; no licence is required to run a tree company in Ontario. Call or text 613-715-0103.
