Gloucester’s Creek Corridors Are Full of Dead Ash

Gloucester covers a lot of ground and a lot of tree ages, from the 1960s streets of Beacon Hill and Blackburn Hamlet through to Riverside South, which is still filling in. The common thread is water: Green’s Creek, the Ottawa River shoreline and the ravine systems that run through Beacon Hill and Blackburn all carried heavy native ash, and emerald ash borer has taken it.

Back yards that back onto a ravine or creek corridor are where we do most of our Gloucester work, and they come with a specific set of problems. The dead ash is usually at the bottom of the slope, the machine cannot get to it, and the tree has to come out uphill through a gate. Slope work also changes the rigging — you cannot simply lower a limb onto ground that falls away beneath the drop zone.

The by-law. Gloucester is inside the City of Ottawa’s urban area, so private trees 30 cm and over on lots of one hectare or less need a distinctive-tree permit before removal. Dead trees and genuine emergency hazards are exempt.
