Most residential removals in Ottawa land between $500 and $2,500. Large trees close to a house, a pool or a hydro line run higher, because the wood has to come down in controlled pieces instead of being felled. Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Ottawa?
Often, yes. Under Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-law 2020-340, a private tree measuring 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height inside the urban area is a “distinctive tree” and needs a permit before removal on properties of one hectare or less. Dead trees and genuine emergency hazards are exempt. Fines run from $500 to $100,000, so it is worth checking first — we do that with you before the job is booked.

Inside Ottawa’s urban boundary a private tree 30 cm or more across at chest height needs a City permit under By-law 2020-340 (30 cm in the suburbs since February 1, 2024); dead trees, hazards and borer-infested ash are exempt; the villages, Kemptville, Arnprior and Rockland follow different rules.
