Kanata Trees Are Hitting Their Sixties All At Once

Kanata has a tree problem that most of Ottawa does not: whole neighbourhoods were planted in one go. Beaverbrook went in through the late 1960s and early 1970s as a planned community, and the silver maples, Norway maples, white spruce and ash that went into those front yards are now all reaching the end of their useful life within a few years of each other. Katimavik and Glen Cairn followed the same pattern a decade later. That is why one street can suddenly need four removals in a season while the subdivision two kilometres west needs none.

The other half of the story is emerald ash borer. Kanata was planted heavily with green and white ash, and the beetle has been through. A dead ash is not just a dead tree — the wood goes brittle fast, which changes how it can be taken down. Once an ash has been standing dead for two or three winters, a climber cannot trust the stem to hold a rigging load, and the honest answer is often a bucket or a crane rather than a rope. We say so at the quote rather than discovering it halfway up.

Newer Kanata — Morgan’s Grant, Kanata Lakes, the Fairwinds edge — is a different job entirely. What Makes a Kanata Job Different

Access. Beaverbrook lots are generous but the mature canopy sits behind the house, and the side yards on the older crescents are narrow. Most of what we do there is climbed and rigged down in pieces rather than felled, with brush carried out to the truck by hand.
